A new Xbox console exclusive is making serious waves this summer — and it’s not hard to see why. Mecha Break, the high-octane mech battler from Chinese developer Amazing Seasun Games, launched on July 1 for Xbox Series X/S and PC, and it’s already one of the hottest games of the month. One major reason? It’s completely free to play.
Originally revealed during The Game Awards in December 2023, Mecha Break blends fast-paced multiplayer action with explosive mech-on-mech combat. The game is centered around short PvP matches with a strong emphasis on movement, combat flair, and deep customization. While the PlayStation 5 version is still in the works for later this year, Xbox players currently have console-exclusive access — and they’re taking full advantage.
In just days since launch, Mecha Break has exploded in popularity. According to SteamDB, the game reached nearly 133,000 concurrent players on PC shortly after release. As of mid-July, it’s still holding strong with daily peaks around 50,000, making it one of the top 50 most-played games on Steam. On the Xbox side, it’s sitting comfortably in the top 35 most-played games on both the Xbox Store and Microsoft Store.
This early success follows two heavily hyped public beta tests, which helped build interest and attract a growing community of players. But while the numbers are strong, reviews have been more mixed. On Xbox, Mecha Break currently holds a 3.5-star rating from over 1,000 reviews. Steam players have it marked as “Mixed,” based on over 16,000 user reviews. Over on OpenCritic, the game has earned a “Fair” rating with an average score of 73 and a 50% recommendation rate from critics.
So what’s the verdict?
Players have been quick to praise Mecha Break for its stylish visuals, fluid combat, and robust mech customization, which lets you fine-tune your machine down to the paint job. Its performance on both PC and Xbox is also earning it points, with solid optimization across the board. Accessibility features and smooth matchmaking are additional highlights.
However, it’s not all good news. The game’s aggressive monetization model has been raising eyebrows, with pricey cosmetic bundles and a grind-heavy battle pass pushing players toward its premium tier. There’s also criticism over the lack of a dedicated PvE mode, with most of the game’s content revolving strictly around PvP — a choice that may turn off more casual or solo-focused players.
That said, Amazing Seasun has already shown a strong track record of listening to its community. If player feedback continues to roll in — and it will — there’s a chance some of these pain points could be addressed in future updates.
For now, Mecha Break is shaping up to be a summer hit — especially for Xbox fans craving a stylish, fast-paced, and totally free experience. If you’re a mech-head or just looking for a new competitive itch to scratch, it might be time to boot up and break some bots.
