James Carter Cathcart, one of the most iconic voices in the Pokémon franchise, has passed away at the age of 71 following a courageous battle with throat cancer. Known for breathing life into several of the series’ most beloved characters — including the mischievous Meowth, the flamboyant James of Team Rocket, and the wise Professor Oak — Cathcart’s contributions helped shape the childhoods of millions around the world.
With over 1,000 episodes to its name, the Pokémon anime has hosted countless voice actors over the years, but few were as pivotal and universally recognized as Cathcart. Beyond Pokémon, his career included work in Yu-Gi-Oh!, Sonic the Hedgehog, and other fan-favorite series, further cementing his legacy in the voice acting community.
Cathcart retired from voice acting in 2023 after publicly revealing his diagnosis. His departure marked the end of an era for fans who had grown up with his voice guiding them through epic battles, heartfelt lessons, and hilarious Team Rocket mishaps.
Tributes have begun pouring in from colleagues, friends, and fans alike.
Erica Schroeder, fellow voice actor and colleague, posted a heartfelt message on Instagram, calling Cathcart “one of the most joyful, exuberant, kind-hearted and talented souls.”
On Reddit, fans expressed their gratitude and sorrow. “Beloved friend of our community that made many special memories for so many children, you will be so dearly missed,” one user shared. Another commenter, who revealed they were Cathcart’s niece, added a touching memory: “He used to send me birthday messages as Meowth. He’ll be dearly missed.”
Cathcart’s impact went far beyond the screen. His work helped bring joy, emotion, and laughter to generations of fans — many of whom are now sharing their own Pokémon journeys with the next generation.
As the anime world and Pokémon community mourn his loss, James Carter Cathcart will be remembered not only for the characters he voiced but for the heart, humor, and humanity he brought to every role.
Rest in peace, legend. Thank you for the memories.
